Repositorio de Casos del proyecto de Bilingüismo. 1. Biodiversity Case. Version 1. The growing demand for oil and gas from petroleum industry has changed the way we live, communicate, travel and work. For some people, it represents more comfortable lives and higher incomes due to the advances in technology and the high-paying jobs in the oil industry. We are hardly aware of all that derives from this vital resource but thousands of products such as fuel and power for the home, factories and hospitals as well as food preservatives, antiseptics, cleaning products, cosmetics, tools, equipment, cooking pans toys, clothes, alarms, credits cards, fertilizers are present in our daily life. Do you know how these products affect our environment and climate change? Oil consumption continues to increase causing the warming of the planet affecting plants, animals and the snow on. Clean water is also increasingly contaminated. We are aware and witness of droughts, floods, acid rain, oil-spills, chemicals accidents. We are surrounded on land and sea by huge mountains of garbage derived from foam, plastic, toys, cellular phones, vehicles (ships, spaceships, trucks, cars) equipment and computers. What do you think is the most important, the economic development of a country or the preservation of water, snow on, fauna, flora and ethnic cultures?, What can we do now to secure our future? Have you listened about a person or a community who is against oil exploration companies and projects?, Do you agree or disagree with oil explorations? Why? Biodiversity Case. Versión 2. The growing consumption for oil and gas has changed the way we live, communicate, travel and work. For some people, it represents more comfortable lives, advances in technology, more toys, cars, factories, hospitals and cleaning products. Which point of view do you support? What do you prefer a confortable life and technology advances? Why? Or would you prefer more plants and clean air? Why? 2. Jean Day (English version). Some students and parents do not like jean day, because they have to pay money and the students have less classes on that day. However, there are some students who are tired of the uniformity and pay with pleasure. What do you prefer, do you like jean day and paying extra money? Or do you prefer to wear the uniforn and not pay that fee? What do you think about uniforms for students and professionals? Is there any other similar activity to jean day? Although he was very smart and got good grades, he was always finding ways to trick people. One day he decided stay afterschool to study and when everyone had left the school that night, he hid in the cafeteria closet and tried to scare the night watchman by laughing loudly and yelling bad words. The next morning the teachers found him shaking and unable to speak. He looked very strange. Two policemen arrived at the school to investigate what had happened the night before. One concluded that he had gotten ill and the other thought that he seen a ghost. His voice never came back and sadly, he dropped out the school. What do you think happened to Anderson? Did he see a ghost or he got ill that night? Why? 4. Orinoco River. Orinoco River is the third largest river in the world, after Amazon and Congo rivers. Orinoco means a place to navigate. It has many tributaries like Guaviare, Vichada, Meta, Arauca and most of the important rivers in Venezuela. Orinoco river region possesses the biggest petroleum reserves. It is home to many species of flora and fauna like oaks, palms, swamp grasses. tembladores, toninas, piranhas, corocoras, parrots and crocodiles. Even though, Orinoco river has all of these ecosystems and richness of nature, it has been contaminated by humans. When people raise catlle & deforest land or build a factory; they contaminate the river and the soil by throwing all kinds of trash and polluting materials. Who contaminates the Orinoco river; people who lives around the river or people who visit Orinoco river? Why?. Propose how people can contribute to keep the river clean. 5. Glyphosate. Colombian fumigations with glyphosate is the most effective way to attack drug cultivation since 1994. Colombia and USA has spent important resources in aerial fumigation with a herbicide called Roundup, mainly because it is a successful method in the drug war, it allows politician to demonstrate they are making progress in drugs eradication and its more effective than manual eradication. But, recently, Colombia`s government ordered to stop the use of glyphosate due to many risks related to health and the harmful effect to water, environment and natural species. Why is it important to continue or to stop this method of fighting the drug world? 6. English Teachers. The ability to speak English has become a vital skill in our globalized world. Therefore, there is a high demand for teachers of English. One of the requirements typically used to hire these teachers is whether they come from an English speaking country. In Colombia for example, teachers from English-speaking countries are considered the best; even though they may not be qualified to teach English or do not know about the cultural norms or values of Western countries such as the United States or England. Another qualification is whether, teachers of English have spent time in English speaking countries even if they are not qualified. While both teachers may not be qualified, which one would you prefer, a local or an international teacher? Which would be the best teacher for you? Why? Mention the qualities an English teacher should have. 7. Antonio & Rogelio. Speaking an unfamiliar language is kind of an intimidating challenge. Rogelio liked English so much that his mother sent him to study English in USA. Now, he is first in his English class and he participates frequently. In contrast, Antonio feels speaking another language is difficult. He does not understand instructions and exercises and doesn’t like to participate in conversations. As a result, he failed the subject and his father yelled and punished him. Do you think the only way to learn English is going to an English-speaking country to study there or Do you think Antonio can learn English in Colombia? 8. Tropical Weather. Colombia is known for being a tropical country because it is located near the Equator. Tropical regions typically experience temperatures of at least 18 °C (64 °F) the entire year. In contrast, some people who live in this region are happy with the numerous species of animals, the rich flora and fauna and particularly, the rainforest. They say that they enjoy the rain and the warmth of the sun and do not suffer from low or extreme temperatures such as snow storms, twisters, foggy weather or other natural disasters found in cold climates in other regions of the world. What´s your opinion, do you think tropical weather is better than cold climates? Why or why not? 9 The Ghost at Alberto Lleras School. People say that there is a ghost at Alberto Lleras School. The school at Puerto Carreño is not the exception. Our school is overrun by these birds. They make their nests in all of the buildings and their feces are splattered everywhere. Also, they cause damage when they use any kind of material to build their nests. We don´t know what to do, the smell in the classroom and throughout the school grounds is unbearable.
